VAASL 2019 Conference – LIBRARY FUSION

I recently had the pleasure of attending the three-day VAASL (Virginia Association of School Librarians) conference in Roanoke, VA. This was my first full library conference and it was incredible. I was overwhelmed by the choice and variety of presentations that I could attend. Many of the sessions were led by current school librarians. It was so helpful to hear about different programs and ideas that are being implemented in their libraries with their students. A few of my favorite sessions were Library Centers, Kindergarten in the Library – It Doesn’t Have to be Scary, Topics and Trends for Library Fusion, and Survival Guide: The First Year Librarian. I had the pleasure of meeting Candace Fleming and hearing her speak about turning students into nonfiction detectives. She shared stories and primary sources that had us as adults on the edge of our seats. I can only imagine how engaging that will be with students in the library. Attending the VAASL conference helped me connect with librarians from all over the state, meet other Longwood students and alumni, as well as meet and hear from amazing authors. This opportunity enhanced my current school librarianship program and I look forward to attending VAASL and other local conferences in the future to stay current with what is happening in school libraries.
