Goal 2- English 150

I took English 150 the first semester of my freshman year at Longwood.  The professor was new to Longwood and was unsure how to successfully run a freshman writing course.  She chose to have us write about our thoughts for the first 20 minutes of every class period and then discuss with each other what we wrote.  Although I learned a great deal about how Sam missed her truck and her dog, I learned very little about writing in the college environment.  I was frustrated by the lack of stimulation and I was only further angered when I learned that my friends in other English 150 classes were learning about citations, rhetoric, and critical reading skills.  My lack of interest in the course caused my grade to drop and my final grade for that course is still one of the worst grades on my transcript.  Reflecting on the class as a senior, I now understand that one cannot blame a lack of success on a lack of interest.  In life, we have to do things that we do not want to.  Even if I get my dream job, I may still have to complete mundane tasks that I deem uninteresting.  English 150 was dull, but it was still a three credit class that counted towards my overall GPA.  I should have put more effort into it and I see that now.  One of the only essays my professor had us write was an essay on a hard time in our lives.  I wrote about how I lost my high school best friend because of a petty dispute over boys and tennis.  Here is a picture of that friend.
