Week 7

  1. As recreation professionals, boredom is a concept we deal with often. What does the author say about boredom and its impact on building healthy habits. Using his recommendations, give an example of a work habit that you have experienced boredom and identify how to overcome that in order to retain the “good” habit.

Making sure you are doing something that not only you like to do, but something you are “made to do” can help you stay motivated. “The key is to direct your effort toward areas that both excite you and match your natural skills, to align your ambition with your ability” (Clear, 2018). An example for me that really helps with boredom is taking small breaks from work can be a reward. If I get an email sent off, or complete an assignment, or even read a singular chapter I give myself a break and do something I like to do which will not make me as bored. After I do some homework I will give myself a certain amount of time on my phone or play video games and this keeps my motivation high and boredom low for doing work.

  2. Consider the concept of an “accountability partner”. How might you use this concept when working with clients?

An accountability partner is someone that will be with you along the way and can help you keep accountable when doing certain things. With working with clients you can use a accountability partner in a variety of different settings. For an example, in older adult settings and substance abuse programs they use a lot of group activities. Letting the client know they have a friend going or a partner in the group will make them want to go more. Informing them that if they do not show up will make the other person sad and upset, will give them more motivation to go to the program.
