My name is Matthew McCord and currently I am a senior in the Therapeutic Recreation major at Longwood University. I am also apart of the ROTC at my university, and upon graduating I will commission as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army. The reason I choose to study Therapeutic Recreation is because I have always wanted to help people and make sure that everyone is living their best life that they can possibly live. I feel that I am the most prepared I can possibly be for this internship. Taking the Pre-Internship seminar class has helped me have a better understanding the meaning and purpose of having an internship experience. I used to always volunteer with my sister at the retirement home she worked at, and I feel that gave me a lot of experience with working with older adults and that is why I choose to pick Blue Ridge PACE. I hope from doing this virtual internship I can gain a better sense of self-management within myself, and also a better sense of responsibility. Therapeutic Recreation has helped me as a person find out who I am and want to be; once my Army career is over I want to still help people in this world the most I can. Working with Veterans has always been a passion for me, and helping ones with mental health problems better themselves always brings a smile to my face.
