Correspondence

The first assignment of the semester consisted of writing two correspondence letters. Correspondence letters usually communicate a message, the two correspondence examples here are a Bad News Letter and a Persuasive Letter. As many try to avoid it, most people at some point in their life will have to deliver bad news. This assignment related to course learning outcome two, which was to create professional documents that use plain English. Plain English consisted of using the eight C’s in Professional Writing. These eight C’s are clear, concise, concrete and specific, complete, courteous, coherent, constructive, and correct. Utilizing the eight C’s in professional writing will allow all readers to have a clear understanding of what is being communicated in the letter.  For example, I learned that when writing a Bad News Letter the writer should reframe from using negative language, such as “Unfortunately” or “We are sorry.” The most challenging part of this assignment was being able to write a complete letter communicating everything clearly, but also being concise and limiting only a page per letter. I overcame this difficulty by writing all the information out and then editing and revising the letters for the 8 C’s.
