Step 1: Create a page in your E-Portfolio where you list out the different courses that you took that dealt specifically with the area of inequality. For each of those courses, write down some key concepts that you learned from that class.
Inequality and Differences:
- Explaining the process of social differentiation
- Defining examples of social identity
- Defining and explaining how social inequality, social stratification, and the social constructions of race, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation correlate with society
- Distinguishing the differences between sociological theories of stratification and inequality
- Recognizing the interconnections between gender, race, and class and other forms of inequality
- Be able to define and explain the origins, and forms, of privilege, oppression , prejudice and discrimination
Sociology of Disability:
- Analyzed the controversy over the term “disability” and its definition
- Described the variations among the various models of disabilities
- Explained the development of views toward disabilities and how they vary in different societies
- The relevancy of the Disability Rights Movement
- Defined “ableism” and “handicapism” and explained its origins, effects, and defenses
- Addressed any issues with various disability statutes, such as IDEA, Section 504 and ADA
- Discussed the challenges involved with inclusion in various social institutions, including the workplace and sports
- Used Universal Design procedures and principles to enhance multiple institutions
- Identified the variables that influence whether people accept or reject the identity of having a handicap
Sociological Theory:
- Compared and contrast various theoretical traditions, their underlying presuppositions, key ideas, main points of contention, and significant representative thinkers
- Related the ideas and themes presented social theories to current social, political, and economic concerns
- Provided evidence to back up the claim that people with various origins and experiences have contributed to sociological thought through the formulation and testing of theories
