This advanced writing seminar course focused mainly on anti-black racism and environmental issues. This class was unlike any other I have taken in my years at Longwood. We were given three main writing assignments that all challenged me in different ways. Each assignment was very different in the writing style and forced me to go outside my comfort zone of basic research papers that I have been writing for years now. The writing prompts were vague witch even to my frustration ended up being extremely beneficial and allowed me to write more freely about what I wanted to write and the direction I wanted to take the prompt. Overall, this course strengthened my writing skills better than I believe any other class has by challenging my skills and creativity.
Below is my favorite writing assignment from this course and probably my favorite writing assignment I have every been given. The assignment was to write a “letter to the editor” to a specific person on something they published that we disagreed with, was inappropriate, or was false. We had to express our concerns to the specific person to try to persuade them to understand and agree with our view. I chose to write to famous actor Terry Crews regarding a tweet he posted on the Black Lives Matter movement.
