In the early 1920’s, advertisers began to notice the media effect on not only adults, but also children. In our society today, media and advertising are targeting children like never before. Children see advertisements on television of items they have to have, whether it is toys, food, or electronics. The sad part about it is that parents give into the media and buy these things for their children.
The thing that most interested me about how the media is targeting children is that kids influence what their families purchase. It sounded crazy to me at first but as I looked more into the topic, I realized that the articles I read are completely true. This topic would be interesting to others because it portrays how much children influence annual spending. I think this topic would be most appealing to adults who have no idea that what they are buying is directed by their kids. The media’s effect on youth is important to our society because it influences things people are buying, how people are living, and how people are spending their money. Our economy is not at its best right now, and whether it improves or not is highly dependent on what children and families are purchasing and consuming.
This topic relates to product placement. Product placement is when specific advertisements are chosen to be on a certain television channel, website, in a movie, or a part of video games, to catch the attention of a certain age group. The product placement then influences children’s wants and needs, which then affects families’ purchases. For example, if a McDonald’s commercial is aired during a show on Cartoon Network or the Disney Channel, than kids will most likely ask their parents to take them to McDonald’s or ask for a burger for dinner. In most cases, parents will listen to their children and buy them what they want.
By reading these articles, I now have a better understanding of how the media really does effect the youth of our society. Because of product placement and other theory components, children really do heavily influence their families and what they buy. People need to have an understanding of how influential the media is because it can have a negative effect on kids; advertisements are not always good. Advertisements can encourage the buying of products which then leads to unhealthy spending habits for children and their families. Personally, I would not allow my kids to watch as much television when I am an adult. I realize they will still be exposed to many advertisements elsewhere, but I can at least prevent them from being as highly exposed.
