Prescription Drug Use
One of the nation’s fastest growing problems is prescription drug use. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has classified this as an “epidemic.” Even though prescription drugs can be powerful, they can also cause serious health risks, which may be related to their abuse. Studies from the “National Survey on Drug Use and Health” show that approximately one-third of people aged 12 and older began their drug use by using a prescription drugs non-medically.
The most commonly abused medications are pain relievers, tranquilizers, stimulants, and sedatives. Since these drugs are usually prescribed by healthcare professionals and/or given out by a pharmacist, people who misuse these drugs believe that they are safer than illicit drugs.
