My first year at Longwood, I was required to take a course known as “Longwood Seminar,” colloquially known as “LSEM.” LSEM was designed to help smooth the transition from high school-er to Lancer over the course of the first Longwood Semester.
We had various assignments in LSEM, most of which were journal reflections. In addition to eight journal assignments, we also to do had three group assignments, complete a four year plan, and write a reflection on community service we completed during the semester, an “outreach observation”. I have chosen to reflect upon my outreach observation piece, which is linked on this page.
The outreach piece is about my volunteering experiences in 2016 with a group called Beyond the Numbers.
The piece below is what I wrote.
Since I wrote this piece in the Fall, I have actually become more involved with the organization I wrote about. I have continued volunteering with them and am holding a position on the organization’s executive board for the 2017-2018 school year.
While I’ve always participated in community service, LSEM helped me focus on the Farmville area and learn about where I am (physically) in college. LSEM was a good starting point for figuring out how I wanted to be involved in the Farmville community (as I am with Beyond the Numbers) for the duration of my college years.
