For Goal 12, it is required of Longwood students to take a philosophy course to help them build character. Some majors require a specific course more toned to the major or area of study, but as a history major I lack that restriction.
So to knock out two birds with one stone, I took Honors Intro to Ethics. In this class I learned about various ethical theories and dilemmas.
Twice in the semester we we required to write a paper with applied ethics. The piece below, which I have chosen to feature as my artifact is the first paper we wrote, which is also the first philosophy paper I had ever written.
Prior to college and this class, I had never taken a philosophy course. This paper was my first attempt and doing philosophy-related writing (outside of a test), and I got a B+ on it. What I learned from this experience was how to transfer my writing skills to an entirely new genre and still produce a quality paper.
