Osteomalacia and Bone Deformation
What is Osteomalacia?
Osteomalacia is the softening of bones due to insufficient amounts of vitamin D. It has many names it goes by, but there are two more renowned names. Rickets is involved in children, and Osteomalacia, which is the scientific name, is involved in adults. It is also caused by the body’s inability to break down and use vitamin D. Both of these causes are a result of inadequate bone mineralization. Insufficient calcium absorption from the intestines is a main characteristic into how osteomalacia comes to occur. The intestines cant absorb enough calcium because there is an insufficient amount of vitamin D being eating or taken in, or a resistance to the action that vitamin D deposits.
How do you get Osteomalacia?
Osteomalacia is an underlying cause due to vitamin D deficiency. There are many ways that the deficiency can occur, some ways include the tissue in the body is resistant to action of vitamin D, the metabolism of vitamin is atypical or abnormal, or the amount of vitamin D is under the regulated amount. The way the bones become depleted and underdeveloped is when the calcium absorption is not supplied by the vitamin D, which does the regulation of calcium.
The main way children suffer from this deficiency is lack of milk absorption. Insufficient amounts of Vitamin D milk consumed will increase the likelihood of having depleted bones. Children who are lactose intolerant have a higher chance of getting osteomalacia. Also lack of sun exposure has an influence in osteomalacia, as we receive vitamin D off the sun rays.
Other disorders can cause the chances of getting osteomalacia to go up. Some disorders that occur are Cancer, diseases of the liver, and diseases if the small intestines. Kidney difficulties such as chronic kidney disorders, long-term kidney failures, and a specific hereditary disorder called vitamin D resistant rickets are just some of the most profound ones. Drugs containing certain chemicals or poisons can also contribute to the retraction percentage.
The symptoms of Osteomalacia?
There are many symptoms that associate with osteomalacia. Symptoms include:
1. Muscle weakness
2. Bone pain and tenderness, also vulnerable to bone ruptures
3. Skeletal deformations
4. Bow leg or knock knees
5. Curvature in the spine and vertebrae
6. “Pigeon Chest”
7. Stunted growth
8. Dental deformities
9. Difficulty sleeping
Some ways doctors diagnose this disorder is by a bone biopsy, an X ray test, and a blood and urine test.
Treatments to Osteomalacia?
There are two main ways on dealing with Osteomalacia. First way is to treat the underlying cause of osteomalacia. Several ways to do that is by adding sunlight exposure to skin, but not too much. Also vitamin D, calcium, and other mineral supplements can help, as well as eating foods high in vitamin D, such as fatty fish, egg yolk, green vegetables, and vitamin D stimulated diary products.
Another treatment way is by reducing and/or withdrawing the symptoms by wearing braces to help the bone from deforming abnormally. Surgery is also a way of treatment in sever cases. Several ways to prevent osteomalacia is by drinking vitamin D fortified milk, consume sufficient amounts of calcium and minerals, and getting the right amount of sun exposure is also a suitable idea.
