Hello. My name is Thomas Orr, and I am an English student at Longwood University. I have been studying creative writing for the past three years and plan to go on towards a masters program in the near future. In my time as a student, I have been an intern with and worked on the K’in Literary Journal in a minor editorial position. I am a hard working individual who is detail oriented and quick to extend a friendly hand, and I look forward to a promising career in the literary world.
The purpose of this portfolio is to provide examples of my professional work as a writer. Within the following pages are the following projects – Two professional letters, a brochure, a press release, and a formal report. Throughout my time working on these projects, I have been able to learn all of the course learning outcomes of the ENGL 470 professional writing class. They have all positively influenced my professional writing towards being more courteous and concise in content.
The course learning outcomes of this class are as follows:
- Analyze and produce writing genres commonly found in the professional world (e.g. business, gov., media)
- Create professional documents that use plain English (clear, concise, and grammatically correct)
- Conduct research to create content for a variety of professional documents (memos, letters, reports, etc.)
- Create professional documents that use design – standard formats, layout, use of graphics, etc.
- Practice oral communication skills to present content effectively (enhanced with multimedia tools)
- Participate productively in collaborative projects
