Music 221: History of Jazz

I love listening to jazz, it is my favorite instrumental music to play around others while talking or playing games or while having dinner. I also love history. Learning a bit about places or events I know little about has come in handy when meeting new people from different backgrounds. I figured combining jazz and history would make for the best class ever. Unfortunately, I was left disappointed by the quality of the class. My professor did not challenge us at all and I felt like Ken Burns taught me more during class than my teacher did. The class was easy and I got my A, but we wasted a lot of time when the teacher did not know where we left off, constantly stated incorrect and contradictory information, and had a slow and disorganized speaking pattern. I could have learned so much more in the class if it was done right.

I don’t think History of Jazz in itself is a bad class, I just needed a better teacher. Jazz as a music genre has influenced much of modern day music and anyone who takes music seriously should study the history of jazz.

I do not have a good artifact for this class. We only had five “writing assignments” and they often consisted of explaining some terms and people of jazz. The most presentable assignment was a short summary of the early history of jazz.
