This class was my first enhanced class for Honors. My professor had also never enhanced her class for a student so it was a pioneer moment for both of us. For the rest of the class, a final term paper was required which involved researching a controversial environmental issue that the United States is facing and finding what laws were in place for that issue. For the enhancement, we decided to extend the length of the assignment, write about an international issue, and to create a poster for the spring symposium.
The issue that I wrote about was cod fishing. When writing a twenty page paper, you really need to be interested in the topic and I was very fortunate to get a narrative-style story about cod fishing my LIFE STEM mentor. The book, simply called Cod (Kurlansky, Mark. “Cod: A Biography of the Fish that Changed the World”. Penguin Books. 1997.), made this assignment so much easier.
The enhancement professor is a bit more stressful than a normal honors class. I definitely felt more alone with this assignment. I really enjoy the collaboration with other students on projects and that is something I missed with this enhancement. I met some other students this semester who worked on an enhancement together for a class and that is something I would definitely recommend doing for any honors students who need to complete an enhancement.
I am very proud of the work I did and my professor and I will be working next semester to enter the paper into INCITE (I will put a link here if it actually gets in).
