Study Abroad: ANTH 351 – Archaeology of Prehistoric, Roman, and Medieval England
Before studying abroad, I had never been out of the country before, and so I am not sure if I was more excited about the chance to go to England specifically or to just be out of the United States for the first time. This course was the most relaxed course I have ever taken at Longwood, as the sites and locations we went to were somewhat typical tourist attractions, but also because Dr. Bates and Dr. Jordan made sure that there were plenty of opportunities to explore on our own. Though the course was only a short twelve days towards the end of winter break in January 2017, the amount of things we saw and did made the course feel like we were there for nearly a month.
Overall, this was a great learning experience where I got out of the traditional classroom and could learn on the go, including things that were not about prehistoric, Roman, or medieval England. Dr. Bates and Dr. Jordan made sure we were comfortable with exploring, using the various transportation systems, making our way around London and York, as well as taught us how to be proper and respectful tourists when visiting another culture, something that is very important not only in the anthropological and archaeological fields, but as a traveler.
