The courses NURS 315 and 320 were Nutrition and Pharmacology. I enhanced these two courses with a fellow Honors and Nursing student and we completed a presentation that integrated the two topics. The presentation can be found below and was on drug and food interactions.
For the presentation, we researched five drug and food interactions and discussed the food, drug, signs and symptoms, community resources, and patient experiences. This presentation was not only a good resource for the two of us but became a resource for our class as we presented it to them and provided them with a handout of the interactions. Being nursing students we learn about and experience interactions like these that can be harmful to our patients and our presentation brought awareness to the topic. We found through research for our presentation that often patients are not made aware that the medication they are on can interact negatively with other substances and we discovered that nurses and health care providers need to better explain these topics with their patients. Though we just presented it to our class and faculty, we have them resources that could be used to educate their patient and others on how to avoid and recognize drug and food interactions.
