Johnston Drive

The Master Plan was asked to examine potential alternative uses for the area in Farmville east of campus that includes Longwood House and playing fields. Whatever decisions the university ultimately makes about this area, there are a number of possibilities for creating attractive spaces that nurture both the educational mission of the university and a sense of community. Possibilities include an arboretum, gardens, woodland trails, and spaces that could serve as retreats for students and professionals engaged in research, writing, study, and reflection. This part of campus will continue to serve as a resource for not just Longwood but also the greater community.

“The Historic Longwood House recalls Farmville’s early history, and the rolling landscape offers many opportunities for regional uses, such as an arboretum, park, educational retreat and community events venue.” -Tom Frisbie-Fulton, university architect
