Community

The Cormier Honors College has provided me with a very supportive community of faculty, staff, and students who strive to learn more and help others. Throughout all of the unprecedented COVID-19 school closure in Spring 2020, the honors college has been helpful with all of us to make sure we are still getting our work done and to make sure we are still getting the best experience possible, even through we were not allowed to be on campus. We were offered many opportunities to interact with our classmates and faculty through weekly happy hours over zoom calls, allowing us to catch up with our peers and have an hour stress free every Monday.

The Honors Student Association has helped me to meet new people in the honors college that I wouldn’t have meet if I didn’t become involved. This is a stress free time where we are able to play games, laugh, and enjoy spending time with one another. I was able to serve on the Oktoberfest Committee for Fall 2019, and the Honors Student Association community was very supportive and willing to take time to help us make our banner and our products to sell.

I joined Math Club and Spanish Club to allow me to meet more people in my major and minor, allowing me to gain more support in my academics. In Math Club I have the opportunity to serve in leadership roles as activities coordinator in Spring 2020 and president in Fall 2020 to Spring 2021. I am looking forward to helping Math Club grow and becoming more involved in Spanish Club.

Alternative Breaks is a club that focuses on doing service across the United States. I went to San Diego, California in January 2020 where we learned more about the environment and homelessness. I also joined the co-ed service fraternity Alpha Phi Omega in Spring 2020. In this fraternity, we focus on doing service for our nation, community, college, and our brotherhood. Joining these organizations has allowed me the opportunity to continue my love for service at Longwood and develop lifelong friendships along the way.
