Anyone can be great because anyone can serve! What better way to celebrate his memory and his mission than by engaging ourselves in community service? Too many people see the MLK Holiday as just another day off. My hope is that the MLK Service Challenge helps Longwood see this holiday as a “day on” and not a day off. We want to challenge faculty, staff and students to CELEBRATE this remembering Dr. Kings words and giving back to their community.

March and Reflection

Join the Longwood community and some of the 1951 Moton student strikers and Brown v. Board plaintiffs as we reflect on the civil rights movement and the role in which many Farmville residents played. We will then take time to march around the campus community in unity and in remembrance of the sacrifices made by those who came before us.

Joy Speakes, Rev. Williams and the other 1951 Moton student strikers were not caught in the 1959-1964 school closings.  It’s an important distinction we always try to stress.

Longwood and the surrounding community will be asked to join one another in a historical trip to the MLK monument. During the trip there will be several programs highlighting the changes brought about as a result of the work of many. Students will be asked to reflect on their freedoms and goals toward improving our community.
