MATH-135 with Dr. Wears was a very eye-opening class for me. I learned a lot about investments and it got me thinking about real life and my future with money. I visited him in office hours multiple times and every time I felt inspired and learned something new. The main purpose was to learn about the mathematical investigation of elementary personal finance. We made use of the mathematics of sequences, series, linear and exponential functions, and regression modeling to investigate financial concepts such as simple interest, compound interest, annuities, and consumer loans. We also learned about stocks and bonds, the geometric simplex method, basic probability, Markov chains, and game theory. The emphasis was placed on applications that will help us plan for personal financial success. For our mid-term and final, both times we wrote a letter to a friend describing their possible investment strategies that they should consider with mathematical reasoning behind it.
