I chose to take the Integrated Inquiry into Culture and Language course to fulfill the language perspective requirement because I wanted to further my knowledge in Spanish. This course was especially interesting to me because it focused on the culture aspect of it. We learned about paths of communication in s]Spanish such as TV, poems, songs, theater, and short stories.
I found the film section pretty easy since I had taken a film class in high school. It was almost the same content except was learning it in Spanish which was pretty interesting. The short story section was the most challenging because we learned it online and their were multiple aspects to it that were confusing to me. Overall, I found the class extremely interesting and I enjoyed learning about Spanish in a way that wasn’t focused on vocabulary and memorization.
Throughout this class, I realized I can retain Spanish best by increased practice and applying it to my life outside the classroom. For example, we were told to watch a movie in Spanish and I was surprised to see how much of it I could understand. I was also surprised that I actually enjoyed the movie. The best part of watching the movie was connecting it to the Spanish culture we has learned about in class.
For our final exam, we were told to choose a topic that we covered throughout the semester and write a paper relating to that topic. I chose theater and I wrote an essay about the components of a Spanish play by a group called “Tricicle.” The theater was a comedy and I had a lot of fun watching it and relating it to what we learned in class.
