In order to become a Certified Athletic Trainer, you must complete many steps.
- Attend and earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Athletic Training at a CAATE (Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education). During this time, you will get many hands-on experiences in clinics under supervision of a ATC. It is recommended to get your basic life-support certification and CPR certification.
- You must take your state’s Board of Certification test and PASS. It is expensive and very extensive, so you must prepare correctly. Passing this test will also give you your state’s licensure. This is the baseline test which must have continued education hours done by the athletic trainer. The previously stated certifications must also stay updated.
- During these years, it is extremely important to build your networks. Volunteer and obtain internships at a variety of workplaces. This will build your resume and give you more experience and hours.
- After completion of all of these steps, it is not required but recommended for those seeking job opportunities at higher levels, is to get a Master’s degree.
