Through my research and collection of data from my tutee I learned a lot of things that I was able to actively apply to my research question. As I was applying my new knowledge to the research I was conducting I also thought about what this means for me as a future educator.
In my opinion the data for my student does not begin to touch on how much progress she has made. I think it is clear that her writing improved from her first work sample to the latest data point I included. What that data can not show is the change I have seen in her these past three months. My tutee went from being a very shy young lady who tried so hard, but just could not quite meet the mark to a much more bold and daring student who is willing to take risks. For example, One of my first weeks there she volunteered to read and when she did, it was so quiet we could barely hear her. What I could hear however, was the student next to her whispering the words in her ear just seconds before she quietly mumbled them. Fast forward another two weeks after more tutoring and my tutee is volunteering to read her own work aloud during my writing workshop. Fast forward one more time and she is volunteering to read in front of the class again. Only this time she is not quiet and there is not a student who is telling her what word comes next. The real question is did she gain more self-esteem because she was achieving academically with me more, or was she achieving more academically because together we worked to boost her self esteem? That I can not answer for sure, but I do know that there was a relationship between her self-esteem and her academic achievement.
Now, as a future educator it is my job to make sure I can equip my students in the way I helped to equip my tutee because regardless of which thing caused the other it is clear that both are positive things for our students. I intend to build my students up at every opportunity that arises. I also intend to meet them at their instructional level so they are able to achieve great things academically. In short, I plan on teaching to the whole child, not just the student.
