Scholarship

“You have to believe in yourself when no one else does– that makes you a winner right there.” – Venus Williams

Overview:

That is one of my favorite quotes and it reflects one of the reasons why I push myself academically. To me, scholarship means taking advantage of the education opportunities I have and willingly challenging my academic abilities in order to broaden my knowledge. I have always enjoyed performing well in school and learning new things. For instance, I vividly remember when my dual enrollment biology teacher brought various Protozoa for us to see under the microscope; I was delighted to see our lessons about Amoebas and Paramecia come to life! I was so excited that I took pictures through the microscope and posted the tiny organisms on my Snapchat story! This curiosity and hunger for knowledge has followed me to the Cormier Honors College. I am thoroughly enjoying learning about the various lessons in my major (kinesiology) and was thankful to pick up many valuable lessons from my other classes at Longwood. I was fortunate enough to make it on the Dean’s List for fall 2019 as well as earn all A’s in my spring 2020 semester classes.

Favorite Examples of Scholarship Through Honors:

Through my honors course Citizen 110, which focused on social issues in film, I was able to analyze film and learn how directors use film to bring awareness to certain issues. This class challenged my ability to express my thoughts in a coherent manner as well as my ability to make connections from film to various problems in the world. Although we never touched a textbook, we learned by watching and re-watching specific clips of film to discuss and breakdown the scenes. This experience ties right into the Cormier Honors College’s motto of “It’s not more work, it’s different work.” We learned by actively engaging in class discussions and using critical thinking skills to back up our claims.
