Project Success: Senior Mentoring

Overview:

Project Success is a one-credit, elective course where small groups of students work with Senior Mentors in activities that promote a sense of direction, resiliency, and social responsibility. Senior Mentors partner with two professional staff instructors to facilitate this highly interactive class.

My Experience:

My previous cheerleading coach had reached out to me and asked me if this was something I would be interested in doing. Of course, I said yes. During this class, I was able to partner with another senior mentor to take on a role as a senior mentor for a small group of students. We participated in a variety of different lessons that helped me step into a leadership role to help guide our sophomores in activities that fostered a citizen leader environment. I led a presentation with my instructor on the Social Change Model and the 8 C’s of Leadership at Longwood’s Moton Museum. I also helped guide the sophomores through their culminating service project where we collected and delivered donations for Madeline’s House, a non-profit organization that provides services to those affected by sexual and domestic violence. This class also gave me a chance to improve my professional development skills, including how to navigate Linkedin, interviewing tips & tricks, and tips on “adulting.” Overall, I developed valuable skills to help further my professional development as well as gain more experience being a leader amongst my peers.
