Wild & Worthy Hair Extension Public Relations Internship

Overall, I felt that my internship has allowed me to get a taste of what it truly is like to be in the public relations field. Throughout the semester there were challenges and upsides. During the beginning stages of the internship, the top three challenges that I faced were time management, grammatical errors, and trying to take on too many things at once. These were all fixable issues and throughout the internship, I learned how to deal with these issues effectively.

At the end of this internship, I have had some questions answered about my current career search. Before this internship, I had no idea of what I wanted to pursue. I had done an internship in the summertime, which made me question whether or not I wanted to pursue a career in the public relation field. After doing this internship, I have learned that I can pursue a job in this field, whether it may be event planning or working for a PR agency.

At the beginning of this internship, I was hoping to become a better writer in terms of public relations writing. I believe that I did become a better writer. After writing many versions of the same type of writing, I started to memorize certain patterns and a general format.

At the performance evaluation section of this internship, I came up with three goals that I want to cross off at the end of the internship. The first was to get better time management, the second was to continue to take criticism and being adaptable in when given criticism, third become a better grammatical writer. I feel as if I did reach the goals set. I ended up learning how to better my time management by writing everything that I needed to do for weeks to come. This allowed me to be on top of things and it caused less stress. The goal of being adaptable was reached. This was reached by being put into situations where I was forced to come up with things at the last second. I feel that the last goal of becoming a better writer was also reached. As stated in the previous section, I had to write many versions of the same things, so I was forced to become better at this task.

In order to become a good intern, there was some mentoring going on. My supervisor tried to make this experience as close to working a PR job as possible. She would tell me when I was messing up or if I was doing well at a task. This allowed me to grow at my position.

My experience at Wild & Worthy Hair was a good one. Even though there were times I was overwhelmed with work and I wanted to quit. The team at W&W pushed you forward and encouraged you to succeed. For that, I would recommend this internship to other students.

With this internship, I was able to come out with different samples of my work.

Press release published in the Legacy (a Richmond Newspaper)

Press Release for Alopecia Awareness Event

For press release, I was asked to create a press release that would inform local media in the Richmond area about the alopecia support event that we and wild & worthy hosted. In the press release, I gave the general information about where the event would take place, when it would take place, what the event was about, and why we at Wild & Worthy were hosting an event like this. I went on and talked about the people who are dealing with alopecia and hair loss and tried to make it come off as if we were a community company who care about the people dealing with the issues of hair loss. I end the press release with information about Wild & Worthy and what we are about.

2. Press Release for October Breast Cancer Photo Shoot

For this press release, I was asked to create a press release that would promote and inform the local Richmond media about the Breast Cancer Awareness Photo Shoot. I started off this press release talking about what Wild & Worthy was doing for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. I gave some information about who is participating in the event. After this, I gave some numbers about how many women have dealt with breast cancer. After I gave quotes talking about the event and after I gave the contact information for people who wanted a chance to participate in the “I’m a Survivor” photoshoot.

3. Media Contact List

I created a media contact list for Wild & Worthy Hair so they could have the contacts of local Richmond media platforms. If W&W has an interesting event or story they want to put out then they can contact the journalist, reporters, bloggers, and out media sources.

4. Press Release for Alopecia Support Group

I created a press release for the Wild & Worthy Alopecia Support Group that the owner wants to start up in 2019. The press release lays out the general information about the group that is to come and it talks about W&W feels that it is a needed group in the Richmond area.

5. EBook
For the EBook, I put together a mini guide on how to cope with hair loss. The point of the EBook was to help people dealing with alopecia and hair loss better identify different ways to cope with whatever they are dealing with.
