September 18th:  “45365” — General Education Film Series

The General Education Film Series kicks off this Wednesday, September 18 at 7:00 in the LCVA (and as always is free).  The first of three documentaries this fall is 45365, an extended look at Sidney, Ohio–a quintessential small town in the Midwest.  The film will be introduced by Dr. Lee Bidwell, professor of sociology.  The film series is co-sponsored by General Education and the LCVA. September 23, 2011:  Poet and Memoirist Kelle Groom

Poet and memoirist Kelle Groom will read from and discuss her works Monday, Sept. 23, at 8 p.m. in Longwood University’s Wygal Auditorium. The event is open to the public. Groom’s memoir I Wore the Ocean in the Shape of a Girl is a Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers pick, New York Times Book Review Editor’s Choice selection and a Library Journal Best Memoir of 2011, among numerous honors. It has been called “an unflinching yet deeply poetic memoir that captures the rawness and urgency of addiction as well as the tenderness and heartbreak surrounding the loss of a son.” Groom also is the author of three poetry collections, Five Kingdoms, Luckily and Underwater City.
