Anthropology 204: Language and Culture

In Language and Culture, we studied the Linguistics branch of Anthropology. I have never been interested in Linguistics as an anthropologist, however, it is an integral part of being an Anthropologist in the United States. In the United States, anthropologists follow the four-field approach. This splits anthropology into four fields: archaeology, physical anthropology, cultural anthropology, and linguistics. I have always enjoyed the branches of archaeology and physical anthropology over linguistics and cultural anthropology. It is important to put equal value on all four branches rather than one over another as an American anthropologist. I used this course to remind myself that for a well-rounded education, I have to practice all forms of anthropology. Even outside of my major, I must take classes I may not enjoy in order to be a proper citizen leader.
