Sociology in Practice
Spring 2019
Understanding the multi-faceted sciences behind sociology, this course has allowed me to become a more observant and understanding citizen leader. Learning how societies function and how they can affect and are affected by stimuli, the learning in this class extended far outside the classroom. Assignments such as required service hours, a location-as-text paper, and socially conscious extra-credit events, students were able to learn about the various components of sociology within the classroom and the proceed to experience them outside of the classroom.
As mentioned earlier, learning sociology both within and outside of the classroom, students were required to complete service hours at various locations throughout the community. One of the locations I was able to volunteer was at the Longwood Center for Visual Arts (LCVA). Periodically throughout the semester, students were required to reflect on these service hours and relate them to topics learned in class, writing a service reflection paper which can be found below.
