I enhanced one of my major classes, Writing: Theory and Practice for the Elementary School, with Grace Dalton and Rachel Pata. We worked under the advisement of Dr. Gena Southall. We created a handbook for teachers with English Language Learners (ELL) in their classrooms. Throughout this project, I learned that the techniques for ELL are great for any student in the class. I was able to incorporate some of these techniques in my partnership placement. For example, ELL learn best when hearing the material in multiple ways. I incorporated this into my tutoring sessions. I saw my tutee, an English speaking, first-grade student, thrive learning his high-frequency words because we used the words in multiple ways. We read the word, saw the word, listened to the word, and used it in a sentence. He went from recognizing 21 high-frequency words to recognizing 58 words.
