As a person who has been playing video games since I was able to hold a controller and who now dates an avid gamer, it is very depressing to see the way in which gendered norms can be portrayed in even childhood favorites like Mario and Zelda. In many games, including the Grand Theft Auto series, the objectification of women is evident. Many games work to maintain and even in some cases increase gendered norms. I had never really thought about Peach and Zelda being weak characters until now or thought about the way that even strong female characters, such as Bayonette, are conforming to gender norms. This article makes me want to reexamine all the games I own or have played just to see if there is one character that breaks conventional norms.
