ART 324 – HON Papermaking, Dr. Cushman
For the global citizenship or aesthetic perspectives course, I took papermaking with Dr. Cushman. This course encouraged me to consider the historical and social effects of paper as a commodity and art form. In particular, we discussed Eastern and Western traditions of papermaking and how these influence modern practices, and created works that reflect current social issues. Overall, this course gave me a greater appreciation for art as not only a reflection of cultural movements, but also as a source of advocacy.
The artifact included here is a picture of an installation and artist statement, made in collaboration with a classmate, titled “Literacy as Light” that served to raise awareness of the effect of literacy and the achievement gap on poverty in the United States.
