Common Good Project

The Common Good Project allowed me to identify a public issue and determine an effective way of presenting the issue. Our group wanted to present an issue that we were all passionate about, so we chose mental illness among college students. We chose this issue because there is a lack of knowledge of resources available to individuals with mental illness and as prevalent as the issue is, it is rarely discussed (course learning outcome #1). In our future careers, we will likely all come in contact with individuals who experience a mental health condition which is another main reason why we chose this topic. When choosing how to format our website, we decided to present it in a way that the goal of our project came first. This was to show our audience the passion we have for the subject (course learning outcome #2 &3).  We also chose to create a video rather than a brochure because it allowed us to connect with our audience. We wanted individuals with mental illnesses to understand that they were not alone in their situations. The rationale portion of this project also allowed me to understand the importance of rhetorical tools in different mediums of written communication and how they are important across disciplines (course learning outcome #5).
