My name is Evelyn Marshall and I am a Junior at Longwood University. My major is Liberal Studies with a minor in Communication Studies. I recently added Communication Studies as my minor; therefore, I have not had an opportunity to take classes in that field. However, I have taken several Education classes, one consisting of a practicum. Having a practicum under my belt has given me real world experience in a classroom. I assisted the head teacher with quizzes, lessons, and independent time. I learned how classrooms run throughout the day and how to smoothly transition into lessons while providing breaks in between. I can successfully create a lesson plan that ties in multiple SOLs and keeps the children active and creative.
My work experience of working in retail and as a nanny has helped me clearly communicate which is a huge trait needed to be a teacher. In retail, I had to clearly communicate our rewards program and where items can be found in the store. I had to be organized in all of my job experiences, especially when I was in charge of the front desk at my neighborhood pool. I had to schedule costumers for swim lessons, book pool parties, and sell pool memberships. There was always a lot of information my way that I had to constantly be aware of. That skill translates into the classroom because I will have to keep track of children and their specific needs. With my experiences with children, and the public, I would make a great teacher. I am organized, caring, and a clear communicator.
