While Honors students are not the only students on campus who participate in community service, the Cormier Honors College certainly emphasizes the importance of its students giving back to the communities around them. There are plentiful opportunities for students to volunteer on and off campus. Some of these include walking dogs at the SPCA, working at FACES on a weekend, or working at the Habitat for Humanity store. In addition, there is a weekly newsletter sent out to Honors students that informs them of any volunteering events coming up. This way, there’s no way that students can miss out on finding opportunities to give back! In addition to these opportunities that might require a little planning ahead and organization, there are other ways that all students can utilize “service” in very simple ways. Some of these acts could be holding the door open for a student or professor who is holding lots of things, getting an extra assignment for an absent student, or even giving someone a genuine compliment on a presentation they gave in class. These little moments, although minimal effort is required, could really improve someone’s day by showing that you care about the people who are around you. It goes to show that service can mean a range of things, but what these acts all have in common is that you are doing something that is in an effort to improve the lives and situations around you.
