HONS 395-50: Media and Democracy
During the fall of 2020, I was enrolled in a special topics class called Media and Democracy. This course centered around the debate regarding the role that the media plays in American democracy as well as the ways in which media regulation can potentially limit freedom of speech. Though Covid-19 precautions prevented some elements of this class from running as planned, it still made me consider things I had not before. Prior to this course, I had not thought much about the role that the government plays in regulating social media and the bylaws of social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter. Previous to this course, I had not realized how blurry the line is between what is freedom of speech and what is not. This class was important because knowing about the institutions that exist to insure democracy is crucial to being a citizen leader.
