Scholarship

Scholarship is more than just a financial award. Scholarship means being a life-long learner. The basis of scholarship comes from the willingness to learn a new skill or concept. Whether it be in a classroom, in an online space, on a field, or just in everyday life, everybody should be open to learning something new at all times. Being a scholar means allowing yourself to learn something new regardless of the setting or context. While classroom learning is great, the difference between a student and a scholar is taking the most away from a situation. Even personal failures can be unexpected sources for personal learning and growth. The best thing I have taken away from my first year at Longwood is the newfound appreciation for knowledge. I have taken it upon myself to learn one new skill, concept, or lesson each day. Even if it is something that could only help you once in your life, there is nothing that is not worth knowing. By having a large library of knowledge, you are not only making yourself a more well-rounded person, but you are giving yourself the opportunity to teach someone else and help them in their time of need. In this way, Scholarship can feed into the other pillars of honors. By aiding someone in their time of need, you are providing a very necessary service as well as improving the community one lesson at a time.
