Soon I will be heading to India. Half a world away from Ashland, Virginia. I don’t expect very much to be similar to home. Certainly less camouflage in the daily palette of clothing. I am not entirely sure what to expect. Probably so many things that I want to be around and experience. My group has been joking about getting me a leash so I don’t wander off (as I tend to do) and get lost from the group. I am not particularly keen on the idea myself. Perhaps the thing that I am most worried about is the level of poverty in India. And reconciling that with my own notions of what life is like. How to do I go to a place and not just focus on the beauty of the country when people hunger in the streets? How can I take pictures that are not exploitative of the poor but somehow work to help them? I do not know. But I hope to find out. I do intend on spending a great deal of time with the people of India. In my mind India is much like all the beautifully interwoven tapestries I will surely see for sale in the markets. And how can I fully try and comprehend the whole picture if I cannot see the individual threads? I also really want to ride on top of a train. I am quite sure that someone is going to have something to say about that. But quite frankly it is something I have always wanted to do and I am just not sure someone is going to be able to talk me out of it. That’s all for now. I’ll be making daily posts to this blog as well as some intermittent posts when I have time to. This is going to be such an amazing experience and I want to do my best to share it with you.
