After a delayed opening, we started our day out on the playground today exploring the snow that was left from last evening’s event. Because of the mild temperatures, we were able to spend a substantial amount of time outside enjoying what may our last batch of winter for the season!
Many of the children noticed the dripping water coming down from the roof of our building, as well as the roof of the gazebo and block shed. They were very interested in collecting the water, so we devised a plan to use our large buckets to see how much water we could “catch.” We noticed that the water was dripping at different rates from various heights, so I encouraged the children predict which bucket would be the fastest to fill. We plan to venture out after rest time and check on the progress of our collection!
The snow provided a wonderful canvas for us to do a couple of different art explorations. First, I offered jewels and buttons to the children for use in creating patterns. The children pressed the stones into the snow, experimenting with both matching and patterning.
We also enjoyed a perennial favorite- snow spray painting! Mrs. Smith mixed up a variety of colors for us to use all over the grounds. The squeezing motion required to use to the spray bottle is great for developing those manipulative skills that are so critical in the preschool years. The children enjoyed experimenting with the spray paint by adjusting their position relative to the ground. The closer to the ground they sprayed, the deeper and more vibrant the resulting color was.
Because of the delayed opening and the draw of the snow, much of our Projects & Play time was spent outside. However, after lunch, we were able to do some studio explorations. Lane brought in some costumes for us to dress up in and perform. Several children made plans to dance on the stage in these costumes, putting on a lively performance in the piazza! Thank you for sharing, Lane!
