Before recapping our events today, I wanted to provide a correction to my post from yesterday. We are postponing parent conferences at this time. We will be scheduling conferences later this month. If you have an immediate concern and need to see me, please let me know.

Out on the playground this morning, the children continued their exploration of balance. The balance beams that they constructed last week evolved in several ways this morning as they experimented. By turning the crates on their sides, the children were able to gain height, increasing the risk factor. They also added multiple beams onto the crates, which allowed them to cross side-by-side with one another.

As they played, they added additional features to the beams. Gwen added a third beam, so that “three girls can have their own.” Aliyah added wheels to the ends, seeking to secure the beams. “This will make it safe. I won’t fall,” she said. Matthew created a ramp on the other side of the bench, saying “this one is for the boys.”

The children worked in small groups with Mrs. Jackson during Projects & Play, participating in some enrichment activities. As mentioned in previous posts, many of the children have been demonstrating interest in representational drawing. To build on this interest, our enrichment time today focused on how we can turn shapes into representations of real things. We drew simple shapes such as triangles, squares, and circles, then added “features” such as dots for eyes to transform them.

Continuing our investigation of mail, several children were interested in making “cards” today. This led to a discussion of what sorts of things we can send in the mail. Based on a group poll, birthday cards were one of the most popular items!

In addition to our project work, we also took a quick trip to the beach to enjoy this gorgeous weather, followed by a late lunch. After lunch, we had just enough time to fit in a special music-making session with our special musician friend, Jamie.
