Online Instructor Certification

The online instructor certification program is comprised of 4 steps.

Step One: Online Teaching Proficiency

Instructor(s): Ashley Leslie; Julie Mersiowsky
Format: 8 weeks online
Session: 1 session per academic semester (fall, spring, summer)

In order to be an online instructor, faculty first need to be proficient in the technology provided to facilitate online and hybrid courses.  Topics in this course include:

  • Introduction to Canvas (student and instructor view)
  • Announcements
  • Discussion Boards
  • Tests and Quizzes
  • Grade Book and grading with percentages
  • Course Archives

Step Two: Pedagogy and Course Design

Instructor(s): Ashley Leslie; Julie Mersiowsky
Format: 8 weeks online
Session: 1 session per academic semester (fall, spring, summer)

This course covers pedagogical best practices in online education and course design creation that meets the unique needs of classes within different disciplines.  Based on Quality Matters national standards, participants will build actual course content to be used in an online or hybrid course.  Topics in this course include:

  • Quality Matters standards
    • Course Overview
    • Learning Objectives
    • Assessment and Measurement
    • Resources and Materials (external online resources i.e. wikis, Google Apps, You Tube, etc.)
    • Learner Engagement
    • Course Technology
    • Learner Support
    • Accessibility/ADA Compliance
  • Administrative best practices

Step Three: Shadowing

Prerequisite: Completion or enrollment in Step One and Step Two or previous completion of LOTI program

Shadowing allows new online and hybrid instructors to observe expert online instructors in a real time, live environment.  To receive credit for shadowing, participants will be required to submit a reflection on what they observed while shadowing the class.

Step Four: Course Review/Live Teaching

Completion of the certification program requires classes to be evaluated according to the standards addressed in step two.  Online instructors will be observed in their online or hybrid class environments and will receive written feedback on their proficiency with technology and course design.
