Scholarship

According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, scholarship is defined as “the character, qualities, activity, or attainments of a scholar.” Throughout my life as a student, I have always been a dedicated student that learned as much as I could about the world around me. My academics have always been a top priority for me since the first day that I started taking classes at Longwood. I do my best in every class that I take and I’m always trying to learn as much as I can. My curiosity and pursuit of knowledge push me to learn and gather information in a wide variety of fields. Whether that’s learning statistics or geography or organic chemistry, I apply myself in each and every class because of my deep desire to learn and expand my knowledge.

Both the Civitae curriculum at Longwood and the Honors courses I’ve taken have broadened my sense of scholarship while at Longwood. The Civitae curriculum has encouraged me to take courses that I otherwise wouldn’t have taken. For example, I’ve taken classes such as Human Growth & Development which exposed me to a new field of information that I’ve never studied before. I learned about themes and concepts related to psychology and sociology which were completely different from the science and math courses that I was accustomed to. Honors courses that I’ve taken have challenged me to learn about issues in new and different ways. For example, I took Social Entrepreneurship as an Honors course and I learned how to tackle the issue of raising awareness of plastic pollution in the Chesapeake Bay. These course have expanded my critical thinking and problem solving skills and have equipped me with the knowledge and confidence to tackle real world problems.

I have been recognized on both the Dean’s List and President’s List on numerous occasions. These recognitions as a scholar serve as a reminder of the work that I’ve accomplished and also push me to continue learning and excelling. Scholarship has been and will continue to be an important pillar for me as I work towards my bachelor’s degree at Longwood University.
