CTZN 110: Inquiry into Citizenship

By the end of the semester, this was my favorite course of my first semester. This was due in large part to ….. everything about this class. I loved the content, the professor, the conversation, and the class dynamic. I loved when we would get to go on field trips to the LCVA and VMFA (Virginia Museum of Fine Arts), and the strange photo assignments we had to do. All this would lead to a class discussion on the assignments, or what we saw, or the ethics of a piece of art we saw, really anything. It lead back to the affect art has on our community, and the affect our community has on art. While sometimes it was hard seeing this point, looking back, the conversations I had in that class were invaluable. I heard varying and warring opinions, while in an environment where we could discuss it without it getting out of hand. I never felt any ill will in that room, and it aloud me and many others to feel comfortable. To have that kind of freedom is unparalleled in today’s society.

I chose my final for this class as my artifact. It is a cumulation of everything I learned in and continue to apply in my view and understanding of our world. It was a prevention with the idea of presenting it to our professor as a pitch to get whatever two pieces art we wanted into the LCVA. We had to convince him they needed to be seen in our community, and why. Very high pressure, believe me, as this we seen as a business deal.
