Data Analysis

MEDIAN EARNINGS IN THE PAST 12 MONTHS BY SEX BY EDUCATIONAL ATTAINMENT

https://factfinder.census.gov/faces/tableservices/jsf/pages/productview.xhtml?src=CF

The first graph shows the median earnings by sex and by educational status. I found this data table in the education section from the American Fact Finder website. The data was taken from the 2017 version in the Annandale, Virginia area (zip code 22003). When cleaning up the data I took out the grand total information, because I wanted to compare the data for men and women. The table listed five different average incomes for educational status; less than high school graduate, high school graduate, some college or associate’s degree, bachelor’s degree, and graduate or professional degree. No matter what degree is earned, men earned more money than women. However, the more education you have, the more money you will earn. That result holds for both men and women.

I chose to research data that compares males and females. Equal earning is the common debate over gender discrimination. It would be unfair if men still were paid more for the same job. I understand that people with more education background should get paid more than those who did not finish school. This data shows men are paid more than women, but lacks information on what job that they have.  As jobs differ a lot, obtaining this information is difficult.   I think elementary school teachers are similar enough so salaries for teachers can be compared if you have data on experience.

The second graph is based on educational degree held by males and females. The data I used was broken into two age groups: 18-24 and over 25 years. I also found this data table in the education section from the American Fact Finder website. I chose the same zip code area 22003 for Annandale, Virginia, because this is my hometown zip code. (I will probably be working in this area, so I wanted to do my research). When cleaning up the data I took out the data for the over 25 population that gives age information and over and the details on education below the high school level. To make the information clear, I did two separate charts, one for the population of 18 to 24 year olds and on for over 25. .

I wanted to compare males and females, this time for education background. I found the table very interesting. I liked how that used three variables; both, male, and female, to collect their data. It was interesting to find out that for the 18 to 24 year olds, the females have more higher education than males. But for over 25, more males have earned higher degrees. Maybe this education data will change as the 18-24 year olds age into the over 25 category. I think having the data in a chart makes it easier to understand than just reading it off a table.

These classes I took at Longwood University helped me get to where I am today. Because I want a Children’s Literature minor I needed to take a lot of English classes. My English classes helped me understand analyzing written text. Also, I learned fun ways to help teach English in a classroom. My favorite class was English 380 Children’s Literature, because I read books for children. Some books I remembered reading when I was younger and the class became a walk down in memory line. Other books I never even heard of, so finding and reading other books that children would read was fun and helpful in building knowledge of what books to have my future classroom library. I also took some education classes to help get a teaching background. They helped my learning about ways to assist students with special needs. I even took a sign language class, so I could understand more about the deaf community in case I have to deal with a student, who with a hearing problem. After taking these classes, I feel more prepared for my future.

About Me

My name is Christina Coate. I am studying liberal studies while minoring in children’s literature. As a Liberal Studies major I took many courses in different fields. Science, Math, history, and English are the four subjects I have the most experience in. I felt prepared when taking each class. The best way to look at life is do not get overwhelmed with all that life throws at you. It could be hard juggling everything at once, but that is what teaching is all about. Some days it is hard keeping track of all different subjects. I just think to myself if I cannot manage to juggle all subjects now; how will I be able to teach different subjects in the future.

I believe as a teacher that it is important to keep calm and keep trying. There will always be hard days that you will be “why did I choose this career”. But most days you will smile and think this is what I was meant to do in life. No matter how hard the day is or the work load you have if you keep smiling and having fun, you will get though anything.

I do not have any experience working for pay; however I have been a volunteer at a summer Girl Scout day camp, where I show off my leadership skills. I teach young campers new skills, songs and games, to me it is an outdoor classroom. I enjoy every moment of it. I take one day at a time and no matter how hard it gets trying to control the campers, keeping a smile on my face helps.

Technology in the classroom

Over the course of the years, the way teachers have been teaching their lessons has changed dramatically; from chalkboards to smart boards or hands on lessons to lessons on tablets. As for new teachers, the new technologies can be overwhelming. All teachers want to use the best methods for their students to learn. I am glad that schools have training for this. I want the best for my students, but I am afraid I will fail because the use of technology is not my strong skill. I like old fashion ways. However, it is a new era, so just like all the other teachers in the world; I need to use the newest method to get through to my students.

There is always a down side to the new technology. Teachers need to be aware that it costs money for the school to get the new devices. Also, some families cannot afford them, so assigning homework that uses new technology might be hard for some students. Teachers need to teach their lesson the best way they see fit for all of their students. If teachers get overwhelmed with new ways of teaching with technology, then their students will be too.
