Blog #5: On Gender

Women are still unequal to men even though they have fought for their rights for years. Their presence is underrepresented in popular culture, even though women populate 50.8% of the world. Men have dominance in television, literature, and film. Women are definitely on the rise though.

Television: On Prime Time television such as reality, animation, drama, situation comedies, and other genres of television men are the dominant gender. In the old television show, M*A*S*H, the cast is mainly men with a few women with supporting roles. A newer television show such as The Walking Dead have a more equally even variety of men and women. There are eighteen women in the cast of The Walking Dead, not counting the female zombies; and there are four women in the cast of M*A*S*H.

Literature: In children’s books men are once again the dominant gender. Most of the characters are either men, boys, or male animals. In the children’s book, Where The Wild Things Are the dominant gender is male, even the creatures are mostly male. In the book, Because of Winn Dixie, the characters are pretty evenly equal based on gender. The main characters are mostly women with a few men.

Film: In the movie industry, men are the dominant gender. Women are making their way into the casts of many new movies and some are even main roles. In Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope, most of the characters are men and there are only a few women. There are two women in A New Hope and the other main characters are men. The latest Star Wars movie, Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi has more women in the cast and the main character, Rey, is a female. The Last Jedi has fourteen women in the cast, which is a significant difference from the first Star Wars movie.
