COMMUNITY WORK

FLOYD COUNTY HUMANE SOCIETY | 2005-2015

My mother and I started helping out with the humane society and fostering cats and dogs the year we moved to Floyd. We cared for and found homes for over a hundred cats and dogs throughout the ten years that we volunteered with them. We both enjoyed caring for the animals and helping them to find new homes where they could continue to thrive, sometimes this was with us.

PLENTY! FOOD BANK FUNDRAISER | NOVEMBER 2017

This fundraiser took place the weekend before Thanksgiving in order to collect food items for the local food bank. I was the leader for this initiative as I personally planned the logistical needs for the event, organized shifts to collect items at the local grocery store, partook in those shifts, and transported those items collected to the food bank for a total of 10 hours of community service.

 EMPLOYMENT

TILE SETTER | INTERIORS BY H&W | 2019-PRESENT

Worked for H&W all last summer and this winter as a tile setter so I would prep, set, and grout tile in new beach houses on the Outer Banks. I would usually work 40 hours a week.

HOST | ODDFELLOWS RESTAURANT | 2014-2018

I have worked as a busser, dishwasher, and now a host at Oddfellows Restaurant in Downtown Floyd throughout my high school career. I usually work 1-3 shifts per week.

INTERESTS AND ACTIVITIES

BIRDING

Since I was ten I have been an avid birding. I began to get more involved and hone my skills in 2015, and since then I have made great progress in advancing my skills and connections in the birding community. In 2015 I became a leader on one of the only pelagic, or open ocean, birding boats on the Atlantic Coast. On these trips I work alongside some of the worlds best and most experienced Ornithologists including, Brian Patteson, Steve Howell, and Edward Brinkley. Working with these guys has allowed me to learn more about birding then I ever imagined could be possible.

INTERNATIONAL STUDIES

I have always been interested in geography and travelling, and since high school started I have had the opportunity to take classes on and befriend people from all over the world. Before I turned five years old I had already lived in eight different state across the country, so I am no stranger to changes in the way people do or say things. This has allowed me to be more opened minded when it comes to studying different cultures because I have experienced the the differences in cultures within the United States.  During high school I have had the opportunity to play on sports teams with, take classes with, and get to know people from Denmark, Spain, France, Germany, Poland, Brazil, Thailand, and Vietnam. I have become close friends with many of these people, and have been able to learn about the similarities and differences between our countries and cultures. I also have an interest in Latin American culture and wildlife, and this is where I plan to work in Ornithology after college.
