Goal 1 – HON: Longwood Seminar

Reflection:

I still believe that first impressions are important. It’s very difficult to change the way someone sees something, even if it’s no longer logical to view it that way. I had a very positive first impression of Longwood University; I felt like I was already home from the moment I arrived to campus – the first time, if only for a tour of the place. Being an honors student, I had already become rather acquainted with the campus, the community, and some of my fellow peers by the time New Lancer Days began. In that respect, I don’t actually think LSEM was much use for me. However, participating in LSEM gave me some useful tips on how to survive my first semester on my own as well as how to start building my professional connections early. Although I didn’t necessarily need the course (except to fulfill my general education requirement), it was good to have help in my transition from high school and more dependency on my folks to college life and more independency for myself. It felt like I had so many things thrown at me all at once (or nearly so), especially since the time I declared my major in September, so it was good that my classmates were right there with me in our struggles and triumphs to adapt to our new society. My peer mentor and LSEM professor were also pretty good resources to have available for helping smooth out some of the bumps in the road.
