My name is Taylor Carneal and I’m currently a junior majoring in Liberal Studies with a concentration in Elementary Education at Longwood University. It’s been a plan of mine to study in this field since my early high school years. Growing up I was surrounded by many family members who were/are teachers working with first grade through college level students. Later, in high school, I started taking education courses and doing practicums in kindergarten and sixth grade classrooms. My cousin was a teacher in Istanbul, Turkey, and I had the opportunity to teach summer school with him in Istanbul as well. At Longwood University I’ve taken a multitude of education classes, including kinesiology, special education, and teaching through the arts, as well as a participating in a practicum in a Pre-K classroom.

This ePortfolio is designed to be a final reflection of my experiences throughout the course. These reflections will be guided by the assignments I have created throughout the semester to give the reader a better understanding of the concepts that were applied. I feel as an active citizen that I have effectively learned the course concepts by investigating multiple perspectives with the Common Good Project, chosen appropriate formats with our journals, analyzed the effectiveness of my own texts, as well as other student’s texts, with our Rhetorical Analysis, and I’m constantly working on understanding the nature of public discourse and how our knowledge and skills are interwoven into every act of citizen leadership.

Course Learning Outcomes

1) engage in the process of citizen leadership by investigating multiple perspectives on important public issues;

2) understand the nature of public discourse/debate as determined by purpose, audience, and context;

3) choose appropriate formats in writing for a variety of purposes;

4) analyze the effectiveness of their own texts and processes for specific rhetorical situations;

5) understand how the knowledge, skills, and values learned in general education are interwoven and interrelated, and how they can contribute to the process of citizen leadership.
