Philosophy 315

Biomedical Ethics

This ethics course was incredibly thought-provoking and unlike any class that I have ever taken before.  This was the first time that I have ever had the chance to study philosophy and I was fascinated by both the basics of the subject as well as how the subject was able to be connected to the inter-workings of the medical profession.  The course was certainly challenging at first, but with help from my professor and my peers I was able to adjust to the demanding nature of the class.

Throughout the semester we discussed everything from ancient philosophers such as Aristotle and Mill to topics revolving around abortion, euthanasia, and genetic enhancement.  Hearing the opinions and the stories of my classmates involving these particular topics really opened my mind and helped me to better understand the ethical beliefs of not only myself but of those around me.  Applying Philosophy to modern day ethical issues is something that I will continue to use throughout my time at Longwood and later on throughout my career as a nurse.

I have attached below the final reflection of the course that was submitted to my professor.  This course strengthened many of my views but also caused me to reconsider many views that I once held near and dear to my heart.  I will forever be grateful for this class and its ability to provide me with lifelong knowledge about ethics within the medical profession.
